Softball Closes Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic With 9-2 Win Over Seattle

Long Beach State set a new season-high with 18 hits in the win.
A big first inning set the stage for Long Beach State (8-7) in the win. Olson singled to start the game, followed by hits from Rylie Seip and Sydney McCollum to load the bases. After a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Gonzalez, Abby Lockman hit her third home run of the season to dead center, a three-run shot that put the Beach on top 4-0. LBSU kept the rally going, scoring one more on a sacrifice after a single from Maddy Ruffin and a double down the line by Naomi Hernandez.
Three hits in the first inning got Seattle (5-10) on the board in the bottom half with two runs. The Beach brought the top of the order up to start the second with similar results, however, as Olson and McCollum singled in front of Lockman, who doubled into the gap to plate to more to make the score 7-2.
After Kellie White's early struggles, the senior cruised the rest of the way, ultimately striking out six and allowing just one hit after the first inning on the way to the victory.
Long Beach State pushed two more runs in both the top of the fifth and sixth innings, and then White gave way to fellow senior Devyn Magnett, who finished the game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Tournament play continues next week for Long Beach State with another weekend on the road. The Beach will start the San Diego Classic in the kickoff game, playing at the co-hosts San Diego on Thursday night at 7 p.m. before two games each Friday and Saturday.
