Long Beach State went on the road on Thursday afternoon, coming up short against San Diego by a 4-1 margin. The loss snaps LBSU’s four-match winning streak, but the Beach will be back in action on Friday at UC Riverside.
SAN DIEGO – Long Beach State women's tennis opened its weekend with a 4-1 defeat at San Diego on Thursday afternoon, snapping the Beach's four-match winning streak. Sophomore Wiktoria Rutkowska was 2-0 on the day, earning LBSU's point with a straight-set singles win.
Rutkowska was again at No. 4 in the singles lineup, and came through with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Helena Francati.
At the top of the lineup, Natalia Munoz was playing a ranked opponent for the second match in a row, this time going against No. 59 Solymar Colling for the Toreros. Just below her at the No. 2 spot, Emma Bardet was leading 5-4 in set two, looking to force a decisive third game when play was stopped.
In doubles, the point was competitive with the Beach winning 6-2 at the No. 2 spot to take an early advantage. Bardet and Rutkowska earned that victory, and after San Diego won the third doubles flight, it came down to Munoz and Zara Lennon at No. 1. Unfortunately, they were edged out by a 7-5 margin to give USD the 1-0 lead in the match.
The Beach will be back in action on Friday afternoon, visiting UC Riverside for a Big West contest.
