Women’s Tennis Sails Past Saint Mary’s, 4-0

Long Beach State took care of business with a 4-0 win over Saint Mary’s on Saturday, picking up a fourth consecutive win on its home courts. The Beach picked up three straight-set wins in singles to clinch an efficient win over the Gaels.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State improved to 4-1 on the season with a quick 4-0 victory over visiting Saint Mary's on Saturday at Rhodes Tennis Center.
"I'm really happy with the progress we are making on the court," said LBSU head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "It was a strong weekend for the team."
Indeed, since a season-opening loss on the road at No. 19 USC, the Beach have responded with four consecutive victories by a combined margin of 19-4.
Saturday's win started with the doubles point, where Emma Bardet/Wiktoria Rutkowska blanked their opponents with a 6-0 win, then Sadaf Sadeghvaziri/Lalita Devarakonda earned the clinching 6-3 win at No. 3. In the top singles match, Natalia Munoz/Zara Lennon were leading 5-4 but their match went unfinished.
In singles play, Devarakonda improved to 5-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win to put the Beach in front 2-0. Rutkowska was the next to win with a 6-4, 6-3 margin, then Lennon produced the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-3 win. At the top spot in the lineup, Natalia Munoz was locked in a battle with No. 19-ranked Mariia Kozyreva after going 0-6, 6-3 in the first two sets. Unfortunately, the match was left unfinished after just one game in set three.
The Beach will head out on the road for the next two weeks, starting Thursday at San Diego for a 1:30 p.m. showdown.
