After a runner-up finish in the high jump on Friday, senior Jason Smith rewrote the Long Beach State record books in Saturday’s men’s long jump competition, matching the indoor school record with a leap of 25-07.25 to win the event at the UW Invitational in Washington.
SEATTLE -- Senior Jason Smith leaped to the top of the Long Beach State record book on Saturday, matching the school record in the indoor long jump with a mark of 25-07.25. That number was good enough to win the event by 4.5 inches, and it tied him with former teammate and 2019 indoor and outdoor NCAA All-American Kemonie Briggs.
Smith was previously fourth on the all-time indoor list at Long Beach State, but Saturday's PR moved him up into a tie for first with his former teammate, Briggs. The next-closest collegiate competitor jumped a 24-06.50 in the meet, giving Smith a margin of more than a foot over the closest NCAA challenger.

In the men's heptathlon, Derreck Affor had a strong showing in the 60m hurdles, winning that event with a time of 8.24. That win moved him up to sixth place in the event standings and he would eventually finish the event in 11th place.
Â
In the mile, Ryley Fick was LBSU's top finisher in a time of 5:04.01, with teammate Alyssa Allen following with a time of 5:14.36. In the men's mile, Ricky Villa ran a 4:20.15 for the Beach.

The next event for Long Beach State will be Air Force Team Challenge on Friday, Feb. 7.
