LOS ANGELES – The Long Beach State women's basketball team battled USC through nine ties and four lead changes, before coming up just short (71-65) at the Galen Center on Wednesday evening.
The Beach (1-1) shot 38.3-percent (23-for-60) from the field as they were led by redshirt junior forward Naomi Hunt. Hunt finished the game with 19 points as she drained five three-point field goals. Her five made-threes bring her career total to 119 as she moves into a tie for 7th place all-time at Long Beach State.
USC (3-4) shot 50-percent from the field as the Trojans connected on 27-of-54 field goals. The Women of Troy were led by Jordan Sanders (23 points), Endyia Rogers (18 points), and Desiree Caldwell (10 points) on offense.
Both teams shot well from long distances with USC holding the edge 47.1-percent to LBSU's 40.9-percent. The Beach out-rebounded by the Trojans, 36-30, but made up for it with eight steals to the Trojans' three.
The game started out close as the two teams exchanged points in the first half and found themselves deadlocked at 30-30 going into halftime.
The Trojans opened the game up in the third quarter as they used an 11-0 run to take a 41-33 lead over the Beach with 5:44 on the clock. Long Beach State was unfazed and continued playing its game despite going into the fourth quarter down by 10 (50-40).
The fourth quarter saw the Beach bound back and cut USC's lead down to four (63-59) on a three-pointer from Hunt at 2:30. With the game within reach, Long Beach State stayed close as Justina King hit a three of her own with just 1:10 remaining to keep it a two-possession game (67-63). However, LBSU was forced to foul USC and Caldwell made the most of her trips to the line as she sunk all four of her free throws to give the Trojans a 71-63 edge. Kristyna Jeskeova's layup with just 3 seconds left made it 71-65 as the clock expired.
Long Beach State played a solid game as the Beach got 13 points from King, nine points from Jeskeova, and eight points from the trio of Ma'Qhi Berry, Patricia Chung, and Myrrah Joseph.
Jeskeova just missed a double-double as the sophomore forward grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds to go along with her nine points. She also led the squad with three steals.
Hunt led the Beach with six assists, which is a new career-high for the Fullerton, Calif., native. She also contributed eight rebounds and two steals in the game.
Long Beach State will open Big West Conference action at the Walter Pyramid on Sunday, Dec. 27 when the Beach host UC Riverside. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
