LONG BEACH, Calif. – Day one of the Beach Tennis Winter Invitational was a good one for Long Beach State as the Beach went 6-1 in singles play to start its weekend at Rhodes Tennis Center. Sophomore Emma Bardet picked up two wins on Friday, winning at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles for Long Beach.
Â
LBSU opened the tournament by playing singles matches primarily against Portland State, sweeping all six against the Vikings. All of the wins for the Beach came in straight sets, with Natalia Munoz winning 6-2, 6-4 at the top flight.
Â
Bardet took care of business with a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, then teamed up with partner Wiktoria Rutkowska for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, the lone doubles win for LBSU on Friday. Rutkowska was unable to play a singles match after her opponent was withdrawn, but the Beach still had plenty of success on its home courts.
Â
Sadaf Sadeghvaziri won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, Zara Lennon was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at the fifth flight, Lalita Devarakonda won by an identical margin at No. 6 and Carlota Casasampere was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at the No. 7 spot.
Â
Friday's start was delayed due to wet conditions in Long Beach, but rain appears to have subsided for the weekend, meaning the tournament should be on track for an 11 a.m. start on Saturday. LBSU will be playing singles against Portland and doubles against Portland State on day two.
