Long Beach State Falls in Four to No. 11 Hawaii

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State took a set off of No. 11 Hawaii, but eventually dropped a 3-1 [16-25, 25-21, 21-25, 16-25] decision to the Rainbow Wahine on Friday night at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach fall to 3-11 on the year and 0-2 in Big West action after dropping their sixth-straight contest. Meanwhile, the Rainbow Wahine improve to 11-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Sophomore outside hitter Kashauna Williams led the team in scoring for the 10th time this season as she notched 14 kills, while hitting .250. She also added five digs and two blocks. Sophomore setter Carly Aigner-Swesey distributed 35 assists, while collecting seven digs, one kill and one block.
Defensively, senior libero Hailey Harward led the squad with 16 digs, while senior middle YiZhi Xue posted five blocks.
Junior transfer Avery Nelson made her Beach debut at outside hitter and finished the match with six kills, while Miranda Canez and Xue each posted nine, while hitting an identical .389.
Hawaii out-hit Long Beach State .367 to .194 in the first set and cruised to a 25-16 win to take a 1-0 set lead. However, the Beach battled back and evened things up after winning the second set, 25-21. With the match tied up at one set apiece, Long Beach State and Hawaii fought each other through 10 ties and four lead changes in the third set, before Hawaii earned the win, 25-21.
Leading two sets to one, Hawaii came out swinging in the fourth set as the Rainbow Wahine hit .364. The Beach, meanwhile, struggled and posted a .000 attack percentage as their seven kills were offset by as many errors. Following a 1-1 tie, Hawaii led the rest of the set and claimed a 25-16 win to hand Long Beach State a 3-1 loss.
The Rainbow Wahine hit .219 in the match to LBSU's .152 and were led offensively by Hanna Hellviq's 17 kills.
Long Beach State hits the road and will face CSUN on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. as the Beach look to get back on the winning track.
