Williams and Nelson lead the Beach with 19 and 18 kills respectively, while Harward adds 22 digs in win

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –
After dropping the first set to CSUN, Long Beach State bounded back and won the next three to snap a six-match losing streak and collect its first Big West Conference win of the year. The Beach downed the Matadors by set scores of 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 to win in four.

The Beach (4-11, 1-2 Big West) and the Matadors (5-10, 0-3 Big West) battled each other throughout a hard-fought contest that saw 33 ties and 13 lead changes. Long Beach State hit .281 in the match, while CSUN posted an attack percentage of .253.

Long Beach State was led offensively by outside hitters Kashauna Williams and Avery Nelson who tallied 19 and 18 kills, respectively. Williams hit .341 (19-4-44), while Nelson hit .316 (18-6-38). Williams also added two blocks and a pair of digs, while Nelson posted five digs and two blocks. Joining Williams and Nelson in double-figures was Katie Kennedy who registered 10 kills of her own while putting up five blocks.

Freshman setter Tia Chavira returned to the lineup after missing the last three matches due to an injury and dished out 39 assists to go along with six digs and a pair of kills.

Defensively, senior libero Hailey Harward paced the Beach with 22 digs – three off her season-high – while contributing three assists, two aces, and a kill. Senior middle blocker YiZhi Xue, along with Kennedy, led on blocking defense with six blocks after notching five block assists and one solo stop.

The Matadors turned in several solid performances as well as CSUN was led by Nicole Nevarez (17 kills) and Seyvion Waggoner (15 kills). Setter Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker recorded a double-double with 49 assists and 13 digs, while libero Makayla Bradford collected 15 digs, and Hayden Warnock posted six total blocks at the net.

CSUN started the match off hot, hitting .467 and holding Long Beach State to a .189 attack percentage. Despite the difference in hitting, the Beach remained close in the set before losing by five (25-20).

Down one set to none, Long Beach State came back and hit .355 in the second set and limited the Matadors to a .163 clip. The conference foes battled through 14 ties and four lead changes and each used 7-0 scoring runs to exchange leads. However, the Beach came out on top, 25-20, as they evened the match at one set apiece heading into the third set.

With the match tied up, the Beach continued their offensive attack knocking down 20 kills on 43 swings with just three errors for a .395 efficiency. However, the Matadors hit .282 and kept the third set close as the two teams traded leads four times and fought each other through 11 ties, before LBSU took the frame, 25-20.

Long Beach State took a 2-1 set lead into the fourth set looked to close out the match, but CSUN put up a fight. Both team's offenses cooled off as LBSU hit .190 to CSUN's .158. With the defense playing strong, the Beach managed to hold off the Matadors as LBSU claimed the fourth set, 25-22, and handed the Matadors their third straight loss.

The Beach continue their road swing as they travel to UC Davis for a mid-week match-up on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
