Long Beach State Opens Play at UNLV Fall Invitational

The Beach won five of its six singles matches on the opening day of the UNLV Fall Invitational in Las Vegas on Friday. Wiktoria Rutkowska led the way by only dropping a single game in her 6-1, 6-0 victory to advance to the top flight semifinals.
LAS VEGAS – Long Beach State opened its fall season at the UNLV Fall Invitational on Friday, going 5-1 as a team in singles action. In addition to the five singles players advancing to the semifinals, the doubles team of Zara Lennon and Sadaf Sadeghvaziri also advanced via bye in the No. 2 doubles flight, but won their exhibition match, 8-1.
Reigning Big West Freshman of the Year Wiktoria Rutkowska got her sophomore campaign off to a flying start with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Delaware's Caragh Courtney in the top flight. She also partnered with Emma Bardet in No. 1 doubles and battled to a narrow 8-7 defeat against UNLV's team of Li and Li playing on their home court.
Bardet also won her singles match in straight sets, earning a 6-4, 6-0 win in the second flight. In that same bracket, Lennon won 6-2, 3-0 in an abbreviated victory. The Beach also had a pair of straight set winners in the third singles flight, as Lalita Devarakonda picked up 6-1, 6-4 win and Sadeghvaziri was a 6-2, 6-1 winner.
Action is scheduled to resume on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT, weather permitting, as there are severe winds expected in the area.
