LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (2-7-0) held tough defensively in the first half, but couldn't keep the No. 5 team in the country down for a full 90 minutes as visiting BYU (9-0-0) earned a 3-0 victory on Thursday night at George Allen Field.
Â
Lena Silano had a pair of shots to lead the way for the Beach offensively and goalkeeper Ashley Seymour made five saves to set a new career high. The Beach were missing four starters for Thursday's match, and had just five players come in off the bench while the Cougars used 11 substitutes. Â
Long Beach State took the first shot of the match as Mackenzie Magaoay sent one wide just over four minutes in. Kaitlin Fregulia also had a good opportunity off a Magaoay corner in the 25th minute, but her attempt went wide left. The Beach got a huge intervention from center back Myah Baksh as she blocked a ball away from goal inside the six-yard box, denying BYU a goal with just over 10 minutes until halftime.
Â
The Cougars struck first in the 55th minute to take the lead, as Ellie Maughan finished off a cross from out wide to open the scoring. The BYU advantaged doubled less than five minutes later as Elise Flake intercepted a pass and flicked the ball over an onrushing Seymour in goal. Long Beach State will head back out on the road next week to open Big West Conference action, visiting Cal Poly next Thursday at 7 p.m. LBSU's next home match will be Thursday, Oct. 10 against Cal State Fullerton.
