LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (2-6-0) and UCF (4-1-2) appeared headed for overtime on the Thursday night at George Allen Field, but the visiting Knights were able to snag a goal in the 90th minute to stun the Beach with a 2-1 victory. Junior Kaylee Ramirez tied the game for Long Beach in the 68th minute, responding to UCF's opening goal in less than three minutes.
Â
Long Beach State saw more of the ball and created more chances in the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Knights 5-3 with a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. The teams went into halftime tied, and the game picked up life in the second half. After there were just five combined fouls in the first 45 minutes, the teams combined for 14 fouls after halftime.
Â
The Knights opened the scoring in the 65th minute with a free kick opportunity, and Zandy Soree's shot took a key deflection through the Long Beach State wall to beat goalkeeper Ashley Seymour. The Beach had an answer in the 68th minute on a free kick in a similar spot on the pitch, about 20 yards out at the top of the penalty area.
Ramirez stepped up and bent the ball past the UCF goalkeeper at the far post, recording her second goal of the season. The game remained tied and grew even more contentious as the minutes wore on, and eventually the Knights were able to find a winner just before the end of regulation. After a 50/50 ball bounced toward the Long Beach State goal, Ellie Moreno found herself on the end of it and was able to slide the ball past an onrushing Seymour to put the Knights on top with just 55 seconds to play.
Â
Katie Pingel had a game-high three shots and Ramirez put both of her attempts on frame, including her goal. Seymour picked up her first start of the season in goal and played the full 90 minutes for LBSU.
Â
The Beach will return to action in a week's time, hosting BYU at George Allen Field next Thursday at 7 p.m.
