Beach Track & Field Rounds Out Recruiting Class with Jumps & Multis

Long Beach State has announced its final group of incoming track and field athletes, with a talented group of athletes competing in the jumps and multi events.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Track & Field has announced its final group of incoming athletes, welcoming in 18 newcomers to compete in the jumps and multi events. The class is an even split of nine men and nine women. Eight of the student-athletes transferred to the Beach from other colleges while 10 are incoming freshmen.
 
Maddie Deborde, Lake Oswego, Ore. (Lake Oswego HS)

Maddie DeBorde will join the Beach after a solid prep career at Lake Oswego High School where she was a 2018 Oregon 6A State Champion in the long jump scoring the second highest individual point total at the Oregon State Championship. The jumper boasts a personal record of 19' 0" in the long jump. In addition to her solid efforts in the field, DeBorde has also excelled on the track as the 2018 League Champion in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m Relay. She anchored the 2018 Oregon State Championship runner up squad, and owns PRs in the 100m of 12.10 and 25.14 in the 200m.

"Maddie has been one of Oregon's top athletes and brings a great mentality to our program.  She will be pushed by competition at this level and is one who has proven to respond to challenges.  I am excited to develop her throughout her collegiate career and to see how far she can go."
 
Paolo De Los Santos, Tracy, Calif. (Millennium HS/Delta Community College)

Paolo De Los Santos comes to Long Beach State from Delta Community College where he posted personal-bests in the triple jump (47'1") and long jump (22'10 1/2"). He placed sixth in the 2019 California Community College State Championship in both the long and triple jump, after coming in third in the triple jump at the 2019 California Community College Nor Cal Championship. He also earned a seventh place finish in the 2018 California Community College State Championship in the triple jump and was the 2019 California Community College Nor Cal Champion.
 
Sythe on De Los Santos:
"Paolo's training age as a triple jumper is just two years.  Most jumpers get to the university level with 4-6 years of experience in their event. In a short time, he has achieved success at the junior college level.  We see a lot of upside to Paolo and have high hopes and expectations for him in the Beach uniform, both as a triple and long jumper."
 
Jakob Ernst, Eastvale, Calif. (East Roosevelt HS)

Jakob Ernst is a pole vaulter from East Roosevelt High School  where he garnered a personal-best clearance of 15'5". He is the 2019 Inland Valley League Champion and won the Arcadia Invitational Pole Vault (seeded section). He also placed ninth in the 2019 Arcadia Invitational Pole Vault Invite Section.

"Jakob had a successful senior season and brings work ethic, determination and passion as a vaulter to this program. We look forward to his development in our program and believe he has a very bright future here at the Beach."
 
Justice Fair, Arroyo Grande, Calif. (Arroyo Grande HS)

Justice Fair is an incoming freshman decathlete who owns a personal best of 5,628 total points. He placed 11th at the 2019 CIF State Championship 110m hurdles and was the 2019 CIF Central Section Valley Championship Runner-up (110mH). Fair was a 2019 CCAA Mountain League Champion in the 110m hurdles, high jump, and long jump. He also was a runner up in the 300m hurdles.

"Justice brings potential to be a successful collegiate decathlete.  He is already an accomplished 110m Hurdler, advancing all the way to the CIF State Championship, but his athleticism will take him further as he transitions to his new role.  With an already successful group of returnees to shape and mold him, we believe that the environment and culture that already exists within our program will play an important role in his future success."
 
Taylor Finn, Manitou Springs, Colo. (Manitou Springs HS/Azusa Pacific/Santa Barbara City College)

Taylor Finn is a junior transfer from Santa Barbara City College and Azusa Pacific University where she competed in the 100m hurdles and 300m hurdles. She is a four-time Colorado 3A State Finalist, a three-time Colorado State 3A Runner up, and a 2015 Colorado 1A, 2A, 3A State Champion in the 100m hurdles, as well as the 2016 Tri-Peaks League Champion in the 100m hurdles. Her PRs are 15.12 and 45.68 in the 100m hurdles and 300m hurdles, respectively.

"Taylor comes to us as a transfer from Azusa Pacific and Santa Barbara Community College with ability and work ethic to be a strong multi-event athlete. She is a determined athlete and we look forward to her contributions to better herself and this program."
 
Nathan Garibay, Turlock, Calif. (Turlock HS)

Nathan Garibay is a freshman pole vaulter out of Turlock High School where he posted a career-best clearance of 16'8". Garibay placed third at the 2019 North American Pole Vaulting Association Championships and was a runner-up at the 2019 CIF San Joaquin Section Finals. He finished his prep career as the 2019 CCAL Varsity League Champion.

"Nathan was one of the top Pole Vaulters in California this past season, achieving a new personal best vault of 16'8" this month. His positive energy and enthusiasm for the event will have an instant impact on his training group and our program as a whole."
 
Clare Gibson, Perth, Australia (Iona Presentation College/Kansas State)

An international student-athlete, Clare Gibson comes to the Beach from Perth, Australia by way of Kansas State. At Kansas State, Gibson was a two-time NCAA West Regional Qualifier. That season, she was the 2019 BIG 12 Outdoor Championship Runner-up and took third at the BIG 12 Indoor Championship. Prior to coming to the states, Gibson was a 2017 U20 Australian National Championship Silver Medalist a 2015 World U18 Championship Finalist in Bogota, Colombia. The U16 State Record holder and U14-20 State Champion owns a personal record of 6' 0" in the high jump.
 
Sythe on Gibson:
"Clare brings international experience to the program, and high expectations for her future as a high jumper.  We welcome that objective and will strive to see Clare competing at the highest levels both at the NCAA Championship and back in her home country of Australia."
 
Trevor Harris, San Bernardino, Calif. (Etiwanda HS)

Trevor Harris is a freshman jumper out of Etiwanda High School where he was the 2019 CIF Southern Section Masters Champion in the triple jump. He was the runner-up at the 2019 CIF Southern Section Division I Finals in the triple jump after having placed seventh at the CIF State Championships. He was also the 2019 Baseline League Triple Jump runner-up.
 
Sythe on Harris:
"Trevor shows tremendous potential as a triple jumper, not only for our team and our conference, but at the NCAA level. He is only in his third year triple jumping and has improved nearly four feet each of the last two seasons. We look forward to Trevor's contributions to the future of the Beach Jumps Squad."
 
Michael Hull-Littlejohn, Chula Vista, Calif. (Olympian HS/Coffeyville Community College (Kan.))

Michael Hull-Littlejohn is a transfer from Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. The Chula Vista, Calif. native owns a PR of 23'9 ¾" in the long jump and a personal best of 10.81 in the 100m. At Olympian High School, Hull-Littlejohn was a 2017 CIF State Championship Qualifier in the long jump. He placed third at the 2017 Mesa League Championship and at the CIF San Diego Section Finals. He also
came in second at the 2017 Arcadia Invitational in the long jump.

Tegbir Jhutty, Fremont, Calif. (Kennedy HS/Sacramento State)

One of two Division I transfers in the class, Tegbir Jhutty comes to the Beach from Sac State, where he was a Big Sky Conference finalist in the long jump and triple jump, placing ninth in both events. At John F. Kennedy High School, he was a two-time league champion in both the long and triple jump, and was a 2018 State qualifier in the triple. At the 2018 Nor Cal Bayshore Championship, Jhutty took third in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump. He was also third in the triple at the 2018 Nor Cal Meet of Champions and was a finalist in the long jump.

"Tegbir had a successful freshman year at Sacramento State and we welcome his determination to achieve higher goals during his transition to the Beach.  He is an athlete we identified as having national level potential in HS and our work with him will be geared towards achieving those goals.  We're looking forward to Tegbir's contributions to our program."

Jaya Krishnan is a freshman pole vaulter out of Presentation High School where she was a 2019 WCAL Runner-up. She placed fourth at the 2019 CIF Central Coast Section Finals and owns a career-best clearance of 11' 8".
 
Sythe on Krishnan:
Jaya's great speed on the runway and consistency in competition are great attributes leading into her collegiate career.  Add to this her gymnastics background and we are confident she will become a great competitor here at Long Beach. 
 
Kyla Meyer, Orinda, Calif. (Miramonte HS)

Kyla Meyer will begin her collegiate career at Long Beach State after a successful showing at Miramonte High School where she was the 2019 Golden West Invitational and Diablo Athletic League Runner-up. The pole vaulter boasts a personal-best clearance of 11'6" and owns a fourth-place finish at the Nor Cal Section Tri-Valley Championship and was a finalist at the Nor Cal Meet of Champions.

Ciera Muscarella is a freshman pole vaulter out of Camarillo High School with a personal best clearance of 11'6". The 2019 Coastal Canyon League Champion placed fifth at the CIF Southern Section Division I Finals and was a finalist at the CIF Southern Section Masters Championship.

"Ciera is fairly new to the sport of pole vaulting but has shown great progress in a short amount of time.   There is a lot of upside to her and we look forward to developing her further and continuing her progress."

Jorden O'Neal comes to Long Beach State after having competed at UC Riverside in the long jump. A 2016 NCAA West Regional Qualifier, O'Neal holds the UC Riverside Indoor Track & Field School Record in the long jump (19' 2 2/1"). She scored at the Big West Championships in the long jump in 2016, 2017, and 2019 and owns a personal-best mark of 20' 3". The Franklin High School record holder (19'1") won the Delta Valley Conference finals three years in a row.
 
Sythe on O'Neal:
"Jorden has been a formidable opponent in our conference while representing the Highlanders at UC Riverside. Her maturity and leadership abilities will be important ingredients for the development of our program, and her desire to make the most of her final year of eligibility at the Beach presents the kind of challenge we look for.  Jorden shows the ability to make it to the NCAA's and our efforts will be focused on achieving those results."
 
Mikayla Ray, San Diego, Calif. (Rancho Bernardo HS)

Mikayla Ray is a pole vaulter out of Rancho Bernardo High School where she boasts a personal-best clearance of 12' 0" on several occasions. Ray finished ninth at the 2019 CIF State Championships, and placed fifth at the San Diego CIF Finals.

"Mikayla has really impressed our coaching staff with her consistency through the tail end of her senior year, equaling her lifetime best three times.   Her experience at the CIF State Championship level better prepares her for her transition to the collegiate level.   Mikayla comes to the program ready and capable of bigger things."
 
Justin Reed, Hemet, Calif. (Tahquitz HS/Riverside City College)

A JUCO transfer from Riverside City College, Justin Reed was one of the top long jumpers in the state last season. He has a PR of 23'3 1/2" in the long jump, tying for second place at the 2019 SoCal Championship and placing 10th at the State Championships. He was also a two-time Orange Empire Conference champion in the long jump. At Tahquitz High School, he was the 2017 Mountain Pass League champion in the same event.
 
Sythe on Reed:
"Justin is one of the top community college Long Jumpers in the State of California and can have an immediate impact with our program.   He shows a lot of ability to improve as a jumper and we look forward developing his skill and helping him transition to the national level."
 
Fanny Runheim, Orebro, Sweden (Throren Business School)

Fanny Runheim comes to the Beach from the Throren Business School in Orebro Sweden. She brings a wealth of international experience as she excelled in the jumps and sprints. The versatile Runheim is a champion in the 2018 Karlstad Folks Grand Prix 100m (11.64w), Eskilstuna Swedish Championship 100m (11.51w), Tampere Finnkampen 100m, Malaga 200m, Goteborg Varldsungdomssplen 200m, and Copenhagen Nordic U20 Match 4x100m Relay. She has a top mark of 19'11" in the long jump and ran a personal-best 24.47 in the 200m.
 
Sythe of Runheim:
"Fanny brings to our program international experience as a long jumper and sprinter.  Her marks put her in a position to contribute immediately at our conference championship, as well as position herself for the NCAA post-season.  Fanny has set high goals for herself and had been searching for a program in the United States that could help further develop her in the jumps and sprints.  We are thrilled she chose us and look forward to her future at the Beach."
 
Micqwuan Wright, Paramount, Calif. (Paramount HS/Cerritos College)

A local recruit out of nearby Paramount High School, Micqwuan Wright brings two years of junior college experience at Cerritos College. This past season, he was a state finalist in the 4x100 relay running for the Falcons. As a high schooler, Wright was the 2016 CIF Southern Section Division I champion in the triple jump and was a two-time San Gabriel Valley League champion in the same event. He had high school PR's of 48'3" in the triple jump and 21'10" in the long jump.
 
Sythe on Wright:
"Micqwuan had a successful high school career as one of the top jumpers in the state of California and shows the kind of potential we are looking to develop.  Micqwuan has the ability to challenge for high finishes at the conference level and a qualifying spot in the NCAA post-season."
