Softball Opens UC Davis Series With Doubleheader Sweep

Long Beach State closes out a tight one in game one and then blew out the Aggies in game two.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State reeled off a pair of wins to open up the team's penultimate series, defeating UC Davis 3-2 in game one before a dominant 10-0 game two victory on Saturday.
Long Beach State (23-23, 10-7 Big West) controlled the action early in both games helping the Beach get the sweep.
The Beach got it done with small ball in the first inning of the opening game against UC Davis (36-13, 10-7 Big West). Nichole Fry smacked a leadoff single, and Naomi Hernandez followed with a bunt single to put two on. The Aggies failed to get the lead runner on Jamie Wren's sacrifice, and with the bases loaded, Lauren Lombardi walked to bring home the first run of the game.
Brooke Yanez, who finished with seven strikeouts, managed to work her way out of the inning but Long Beach State would never trail on the day.
LBSU added one more as Wren drew a leadoff walk in the third, and Lauren Lombardi doubled into the gap to increase the lead. UC Davis cut the lead to one with an unearned run in the sixth inning, but the Beach added a key insurance run in the sixth inning with a two-out rally. Sydney McCollum singled and then stole second, advancing to third base on a throwing error.
Maddy Ruffin then singled to left to make the score 3-1 in the sixth. That run would be crucial as the Aggies mounted a charge in the seventh. Alyse Rojas hit a one-out single to put a runner on, and pinch hitter Autumn Miller doubled to bring UC Davis within one with a runner in scoring position.
Kellie White was able to close out the complete game victory though, getting a fly ball to left field for the second out and getting some help from her shortstop Fry, who tracked down a bloop into left field for an over-the-shoulder grab for the final out.
Game two started with another quick start for the Beach. After a leadoff walk to Fry and a single from Hernandez, Wren pushed both over and back-to-back singles from Lombardi and Alyssa Gonzalez each brought in a run to give the Beach a 2-0 lead. Maddy Ruffin brought in another run with an RBI single in the third and then the Beach broke it open in the fourth.
Pinch hitter Breezy Wise started off the inning with a bang, hitting a solo home run, her third of the season. Fry was then plunked, and after another base hit for Hernandez there were two on for the heart of the lineup. Wren singled to load the bases, and then Lombardi doubled home two more runs to keep the inning going.
An RBI single from Gonzalez made the score 7-0, and then a two-run double from Ruffin tacked on two more past the mercy mark to put the Beach in position for a big win. Wise, batting a second time in the inning, had her second RBI with a base hit and the Beach took the 10-0 lead which would be the final.
Ashley Coleman was in command throughout in the circle, throwing her seventh shutout of the season and striking out four while allowing just three hits in her 12th win of the season.
ESPNU will broadcast the series finale live as the Beach and Aggies play one more time starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
