Dirtbags End 2019 Season With Sweep of Hawai’i

Long Beach State won its season finale on Saturday night, sending off its senior class on a good note with a 9-4 win over Hawai’i. The win gives the Dirtbags their second consecutive sweep at home as LBSU won its final six games on Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Dirtbags (14-41, 8-16 Big West) bid farewell to its 2019 senior class with a second consecutive home sweep on Saturday night, defeating Hawai'i (20-30, 8-16 Big West) 9-4 on Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Long Beach State had their second-highest hit total of the season on Saturday, collecting 15 hits to score nine runs. LBSU had multiple runs in three separate innings, scoring three in the first, two in the second and three in the fourth to lead 8-4 at the midway point of the contest.
The top of the order produced well as leadoff man Chase Luttrell and No. 2 hitter Jacob Hughey each had three hits in the ballgame. The freshman Luttrell also scored three times to match his career high in both hits and runs. Hughey scored twice and had three RBIs, giving him 26 for the season as he led the team in that category.

Interestingly, the Dirtbags collected three triples in the ballgame after hitting just six through the first 54 games of the season. Luttrell, Hughey, and senior Luke Rasmussen all had run-scoring triples in the win. Rasmussen was 2-for-5 in the game, getting his first start of the season out in left field. His two-run triple in the first inning upped his career RBI total to 102, and he is now eighth on LBSU's all-time games played list with 191 appearances in his career.

Senior Laine Huffman had a pair of hits and an RBI single in the sixth. Sophomore Santino Rivera also had a pair of hits, with a double and two runs scored.

Senior John Sheaks picked up the win for the Dirtbags in his final start, going 5.1 innings while allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Junior Zak Baayoun picked up the save by covering the final 3.2 innings, allowing no runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Baayoun also benefitted from a pair of double plays, including one he started himself to end the game on a line drive back to the mound.

Prior to the game, Long Beach State bid farewell to departing seniors Huffman, Rasmussen, Sheaks, Cole Joy, Antonio Torres, undergraduate assistant coach Garrett Nelson and team manager Troy Stewart. Senior outfielder Brooks Stotler was not with the team Saturday but was celebrated prior to Thursday's victory. Also at Saturday's game, the Original 1989 Dirtbags were recognized at Blair Field, celebrating the 30th Anniversary of their trip to the College World Series and a school-record 50 wins.
