The Beach dropped the opener 4-1.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Long Beach State bounced back from a disappointing game one loss with a smashing game two victory, scoring 11 runs on 14 hits as the Beach rolled to an 11-0 game two victory.
Kellie White held Cal Poly (10-34, 4-10 Big West) to just two hits over six innings as five players racked up multiple hits for Long Beach State (20-23, 7-7 Big West). Freshman Jacey Bourgeois had a pair of hits and a walk in her collegiate debut, while Jamie Wren had three hits including a double to finish with five hits on the day.
The Beach bounced back to take an early lead again in game two with a two-out rally in the first inning. Taylor Rowland walked to keep her big day going, and Jamie Wren and Lauren Lombardi followed with singles to make the score 1-0.
Maddy Ruffin reached on an infield single in the second inning, and after stealing second, came around to score on Bourgeois' first at-bat. Bourgeois singled to right field to score a run and LBSU took a 2-0 lead after two innings.
Long Beach State then broke the game open in the fifth. Wren and Lombardi started the inning with back-to-back doubles, and Alyssa Gonzalez walked to put two on. After pushing the runners over, Ruffin singled in two more runs and Bourgeois walked to again leave two on.
A double steal and an error brought home one more, and Nichole Fry singled home Bourgeois to make the score 7-0.
The Beach then sent nine batters to the plate in the seventh as well. Bourgeois started the inning with her second single of the game, and Fry followed with a walk. RBI singles from Naomi Hernandez and Wren were next along with a two-run pinch hit single from Emily Salazar.
With an 11-0 lead, LBSU was able to find room for a couple of rare appearances as well, as senior Sophia Valenzuela saw action for the first time since 2017 in a pinch hit appearance. Cindy Robles made her second appearance of the season, closing out the victory with three outs in the seventh, including a strikeout to help preserve the shutout.
Long Beach State scored first in top of the second of the opening game. Rowland hit the first of her two singles in the opener to kick off the inning, and after Justine Briones walked, Katelyn Hanson was able to push both runners into scoring position.
Fry then singled to bring home Rowland, but Briones was thrown out at the plate in a critical out for Cal Poly keeping the Long Beach State lead at 1-0. That score would hold for the next three innings.
Ashley Coleman held the Mustang bats at bay for five innings, but Cal Poly finally reached the junior in the bottom of the sixth inning. A leadoff double from Hailey Martin got the action, but after a sacrifice, Long Beach State got a crucial out on a grounder to third base, keeping Martin at third.
A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases for Cal Poly, and a wild pitch from Coleman tied the game at 1-1. A second walk in the inning loaded the bases again for the Mustangs, and brought up the top of the order. A grounder from Noellah looked like it would get LBSU out of the inning, but a hard slide from Sarah Wulff at second base knocked loose the tag from Hanson, giving the Mustangs the lead.
With the tie snapped, Noa Yakir then broke the game open with a two-run single, and the Beach stranded two in the top of the seventh to fall 4-1 in in the opening game.
Long Beach State and Cal Poly will close the series with a third game beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday at Bob Janssen Field in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
