MOORPARK, Calif. – After 18 holes at the 2019 Big West Women's Golf Championship, Long Beach State is in a tie for first place on the leaderboard with Cal State Fullerton. The Beach and the Titans hold a one-shot lead over CSUN in third and a healthy 10-shot advantage over UC Davis in fourth. Seniors Cara Barker and Haley Tygret led the way for the Beach in the opening round as they each shot even-par rounds of 72 at Moorpark Country Club.
Barker got to 2-under on two occasions on Monday, with three birdies through the first 10 holes. She was able to bookend her back nine with birdies, making a birdie on the Par-5 18th to get back to even par to finish her round.
Tygret's round was steadier as the senior made 15 pars in her opening round. Her only blemish of the day was a double bogey on No. 8, but she responded quickly with a birdie on the very next hole to finish the front side +1. Her birdie on the 13th got her back to even where she remained at the end of the day.
Barker and Tygret are tied for second place on the player leaderboard, tied with two other players. That foursome of golfers trails leader Brianna Steger (-3) of CSUN by three shots after the opening round.
Junior Holland Shourds is in the Top 10 after day one, tied for eighth place after shooting a 3-over 75. Shourds was among the leaders thanks to a 2-under 34 on the front side, but ran into trouble late in her round, dropping five shots over her final five holes. Senior Maria Davis was even at the turn thanks to back-to-back birdies on holes 7 and 8, but she was 4-over on the back nine to finish her round with a 4-over 76.
The Beach will be back at Moorpark Country Club on Tuesday for the second round. The Beach will be in the last group of the day, teeing off between 9:10-9:50 a.m. Live scoring will be available via GolfStat.com.
