Tennis Drops Heartbreaker At Cal State Fullerton 4-3

An incredibly tight match tilts the way of the Titans to give Long Beach State their first conference loss.
FULLERTON, Calif. – It went all the way to the wire, but a three-set win at No. 6 for the Titans gave Cal State Fullerton a 4-3 win over Long Beach State on the road in the first conference loss of the season for the Beach.
Long Beach State (8-2, 3-1 Big West) got off to a good start by winning the doubles point. Luxizi Meng and Eira Tobrand defeated Emma Bardet and Zara Lennon 6-3 to give the Titans a victory, but Wiktoria Rutkowska and Dominique Meyer won 6-4 over Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin to even doubles. Natalia Munoz and Lalita Devarakonda then took the point with a 6-4 win over Masako Makiba and Caisey Lee Emery.
Cal State Fullerton (6-2, 3-0 Big West) bounced back by taking the first two singles matches. Portalatin was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Rutkowska in the top flight, while Nuno won 6-4, 6-4 over Bardet.
Lennon evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Emery, a close match setting the stage for three nailbiters to decide the match.
Genevieve Zeidan won two tiebreakers against Munoz to grab a point, winning 7-6, 7-6 against the LBSU junior, while the final two matches went to a third set to decide the match. Ultimately, Tobrand picked up the key point with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Sadaf Sadeghvaziri, as Devarakonda was a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 winner against Meng.
Long Beach State will host a pair of non-conference matches next week, hosting Youngstown State at 2 p.m. on Wednesday before playing Houston on Thursday at Noon. Both matches will be held in the Rhodes Tennis Center.
