LBSU’s No.1 and No. 2 pairs pick up the lone wins for the Beach
LOS ANGELES – The No. 8 Long Beach State Beach Volleyball team suffered a pair of setbacks on Thursday at USC as LBSU dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 15 Stetson, before falling 5-0 to No. 4 Florida State.
With the losses, the Beach drops to 5-3 on the year, while the Hatters improve to 5-3, and the Seminoles move to 9-2.
LBSU opened the day against Stetson and the Hatters took a 2-0 lead following the opening round. However, Long Beach State's No. 2 pair of Zoi Konstantopoulou and Nicci Reinking picked up a 22-20, 21-16 win over Stetson's Darby Dunn and Sammee Thomas to make it a 2-1 match.
The Beach's No. 4 pair of Kendra Koelsch and Sophie Major fought hard to even the match, but came up just short. The duo fell in the first set, 21-14, and pushed the Hatters' Samantha Harris and Julie Varga to the brink in the second set, but eventually fell, 26-24.
Following that match, Megan Kruidhof and Mari Molina won a three-set contest, 22-20, 18-21, 21-19 to bring the final to 3-2 in favor of Stetson.
Later in the day, Long Beach State faced off against No. 4 Florida State. Despite suffering a 5-0 loss to the Seminoles, the Beach were competitive throughout the match. LBSU took three of the five games to three sets, and the pair of Konstantopoulou and Reinking dropped a hard-fought 22-20, 22-20 contest to Alaina Chacon and Madison Fitzpatrick.
Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track next week when it hosts Missouri State and Irvine Valley College on Thursday, March 14 at the LBSU Sand Courts.
