No. 9 Long Beach State Goes 3-0 on First Day of Big West Challenge

The Beach dominated their opponents only dropping one set on the day
PISMO BEACH, Calif. – No. 9 Long Beach State Beach Volleyball extended its winning streak to nine after breezing through the first day of the Big West Challenge. LBSU collected a pair of sweeps over CSU Bakersfield and Sacramento State, and earned a 4-1 win over No. 7 Cal Poly to go 3-0 on Saturday in Pismo Beach.
The Beach (15-4) rolled passed CSU Bakersfield (6-11) as flights one, two and five each won in straight sets. At No. 3 Kendra Koelsch and Sydney Stevens picked up a 2-1 win over Sidney Wicks and Hana Makonova edging the Roadrunners 15-12 in the final set. Meanwhile the duo of Claire Newlander and Sophie Major battled Emily Hansen and Brooke Boiseau at No. 4 before coming away with a 17-15 victory to complete the sweep.
LBSU then went up against host and No. 7 Cal Poly (13-6). Coming into the match against the Beach, the Mustangs were riding a 10-match winning streak and were undefeated at home. Long Beach State juggled the lineup and picked up wins at flights one, three, four and five.
Leading the way for the Beach in the match against the Mustangs were Koelsch and Kenzie Holtz who teamed up at No. 4 and earned a 21-17, 21-10 victory. Stevens and Newlander played at No. 3 and picked up a 21-10, 21-15 win to keep the momentum going as the Beach collected a 4-1 win.
The Beach finished the day with a match against the struggling Hornets (1-10) and dominated each set. Long Beach State cruised to a 5-0 sweep as the Beach never dropped a set en route to handing Sacramento State its seventh straight loss.
Long Beach State looks to continue its winning way on Sunday, March 31 at the Big West Challenge. On the final day of the tournament, the Beach will take on No. 6 Hawaii, CSUN, and UC Davis at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m., respectively.
