Dirtbags Doomed by Home Runs in 7-1 Loss at Cal

3/29/2019 11:32:00 PM | Baseball

Long Beach State pitchers had surrendered just seven home runs all season entering Friday’s game at Cal, but allowed four long balls to the Golden Bears in a 7-1 loss to open the series. Calvin Estrada delivered the RBI for Long Beach State.

BERKELEY, Calif. – The ball was flying out of Evans Diamond on Friday night as host California (12-11) hit four home runs off Long Beach State (3-21) in a 7-1 victory in the series opener. LBSU's pitching staff had only surrendered seven home runs all season entering Friday's game, but Cal busted loose with three off starter Adam Seminaris and one off reliever John Sheaks.

Seminaris had only given up one round-tripper in 37.0 innings pitched this season, but allowed a two-run shot to defending Golden Spikes winner Andrew Vaughn in the first inning and allowed a pair of home runs to Cal catcher Korey Lee.

Brooks Stotler had a single for Long Beach State to extend his hitting streak to five games. Calvin Estrada pushed his own hitting streak up to four games with an RBI single in the sixth inning to score Santino Rivera. The inning started with Rivera's single up the middle, which was the first of four singles in the frame for Long Beach State. The Dirtbags had the bases loaded with one out in the inning, but left the bases loaded after a pair of flyouts.

Freshman Kaden Hogan also singled to record a knock in three straight contests. In the ninth inning, Brennan Rozell got his first plate appearance as a Dirtbag and Antonio Torres made his first appearance of the season as both players entered as pinch hitters.

Freshman Alfredo Ruiz had a solid appearance in relief, working the final 1.2 innings with one walk and one strikeout.

The Dirtbags will look to even the series on Saturday at 3 p.m. No starter has been announced for Long Beach State but RHP Jared Horn (0-1, 2.00 ERA) will get the ball for the Golden Bears in game two of the series.
