Ashley Coleman’s No-Hitter Highlights LMU Doubleheader

3/23/2019 4:49:00 PM | Softball

Long Beach State rallied for an 8-0 win in five innings in the second game.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Two outstanding pitching performances was the story of the day in a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount, with Long Beach State bouncing back from a 3-0 loss for an 8-0 (5) win over the Lions behind a no-hitter from Ashley Coleman, her first with the Beach.

Long Beach State (13-16) bounced back to earn the split in impressive fashion. Ashley Coleman continued her impressive pitching now having allowed just six hits in her last four starts for the Beach including this, the 32nd no-hitter in program history.

Coleman allowed just one base-runner on a fourth inning walk, striking out three on the way to her eight win of the season.

The Beach jumped out ahead of Loyola Marymount (21-14) early, striking with three runs in the first. Nichole Fry drew a leadoff walk, and after an error put another runner on, a double from Alyssa Gonzalez scored a pair. Lauren Lombardi followed with her first hit of the season, an RBI single, and the Beach led 3-0 after one.

Gonzalez continued the scoring with a solo home run in the third inning, and then in the fourth, Maddy Ruffin singled in front of Fry who hit her 40th career double to make the score 5-0.

Needing three runs to end the game early, Long Beach State went to work in the bottom of the fifth. Jamie Wren led off the inning with a bunt single, and Gonzalez followed with her third hit of the day to put two on. Back-to-Back errors from Megan Dedrick at second base brought home a run and kept the bases loaded, and Ruffin ended the game with a double to center field.

Both Gonzalez and Ruffin went 3-for-3 in game two, a new career-high in hits for the freshman Ruffin while matching the career best for the sophomore Gonzalez.

In the first game, LMU's Samantha Manti outdueled Long Beach State's Kelli White on the way to a 3-0 victory. White allowed just one earned run, but the Beach was limited to a single base-hit from Sydney McCollum in the shutout.

Long Beach State begins Big West play on the road next week, traveling to the islands to face Hawai'i. The series starts Friday night before a double-header on Saturday.
