A controversial fourth inning helped the Rainbow Wahine take game one.
HONOLULU, Hawaii – A couple of early breaks for the hosts tilted the momentum towards the Rainbow Wahine and Hawai'i ended up with a 4-1 win over Long Beach State in the Big West Conference opener for both teams.
After a scoreless first inning, Cheeks Ramos singled for Hawai'i (20-9, 1-0 Big West) to start the second. Ashley Coleman recorded strikeout to get the first out of the inning, but a groundout moved up the runner and a bloop single from Sissy Pantastico brought home the first run of the game.
In the second, a walk and a single put runners on the corners with no outs and a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Sojka gave UH a 2-0 lead on Long Beach State (13-17, 0-1 Big West).
The key inning for the Rainbow Wahine was the fourth. Coleman allowed a single to start the fourth, and after a walk, a single that clipped off of the glove of Sydney McCollum loaded the bases, leading Long Beach State to turn to Kellie White. White was called for a pair of illegal pitches leading to a 3-0 count and a clarification meeting at the circle. The ensuing pitch was taken down the middle for ball four, leading to a Hawai'i run and the ejection of Long Beach State's Kim Sowder.
Long Beach State rallied behind White, however, holding the Rainbow Wahine to just one run on a sacrifice fly to limit the damage. Hawai'i loaded the bases again in the fifth, but a one-out strikeout and a nice play from Katelyn Hanson at second base closed the inning.
The Beach threatened in the top of the seventh, as Hanson and Justine Briones both reached base to bring up the top of the order with no outs. Fry advanced the runners and a single from Naomi Hernandez brought home Hanson, but Briones was thrown out the plate and a pop-up from Sydney McCollum closed out the contest.
White struck out three in three scoreless innings of relief, while Lauren Lombardi went 1-for-2 with her hit clanging off of the wall, while five players finished with hits for the Beach.
The series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader to close the series. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT, with live coverage available at www.beachlivestats.com.
