Depth Shines For Long Beach State In 5-1 Win Over Hawai’i

Long Beach State won five singles matches to claim the victory.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State won five of six singles matches to claim an important Big West victory at home, dropping Hawai'i 5-1 on Thursday afternoon.
Morning rains postponed the start of Thursday's match, and the hour later start also led to a format switch as Long Beach State (11-3, 4-1 Big West ) and the Rainbow Wahine played singles before doubles to ensure completion before darkness.
Hawai'i (3-7, 1-2 Big West) got a lift from their star junior, Petra Melounova. Ranked No. 100, Melounova defeated Wiktoria Rutkowska 6-2, 6-1 in the top flight as the LBSU freshman fell in her third attempt against a ranked for this season.
The remainder of the matches went for the Beach as Long Beach State kept pace at the top of the Big West standings. Emma Bardet evened the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Maayan Sela, followed by a win at No. 3 by Natalia Munoz against Nikola Dolakova, 6-3, 6-3.
Zara Lennon, dropping to No. 5 in the lineup, picked up a third win against Roxanne Resma 6-4, 6-3, and Dominique Meyer clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alzbeta Houbova. Lalita Devarakonda, moving up to No. 4, held off Michelle Pits to capture the day's final win 6-4, 7-5.
With the winner decided, the teams elected not to play doubles following the conclusion of singles action.
Long Beach State will play their final home match of the season next Saturday, March 30 when UC Santa Barbara visits the Rhodes Tennis Center for another crucial Big West matchup. Matches are scheduled to begin at Noon.
