
Day Leads Men’s Decathlon After Day One in Riverside

The Beach holds the top three spots after day one in the decathlon.

RIVERSIDE, Calif.- Long Beach State multis are off to a great start, holding the top three spots at the midway point in the men's decathlon. Senior Herman Day sits in first place with 3,862 points in the competition at the Spring Break Classic hosted by UC Riverside.
The 2016 Big West runner-up, Day won three out of five events Thursday, and currently holds a 182 point lead on teammate John Broadhead who is in second place. Day jumped 6.99m (22-11.25) in the men's long jump, 13.46m (44-02.00), and cleared (6-06.75) in the high jump to take the lead. Broadhead finished top seven in all five of Thursday's events, collecting 3,678 points to wrap up day one of competition. His performance in the shot put earned him a lifetime-best mark of 40-06.37, and finishing second place in the event. Junior Derreck Affor was consistent as well, finishing top eight in four out of five events to sit in third place after day one with 3,527 points. All four of Long Beach State's competitors are in the top nine after day one, with Devon Alvarado (3099 points) currently in ninth.
On the women's side, Sophomore Sydney Barnes currently is the top point scorer (2,623) for the Beach, sitting in the eighth spot after four events. Barnes finished in the top 10 in all four events, posting PR's in the high jump with a clearance of 4-11.00 and running 200m time of 26.51. Junior Kaylee Shoemaker, sits in 12th place with (2,341 points) and teammate Lexi Nardoni in 15th place with (2,094 points) after day one.
The men's decathlon resumes on Friday morning at 11 a.m., beginning with the 110-meter hurdles, while the women's heptathlon resumes at 12 p.m., beginning with the long jump.
