
Slow Start Hurts No. 15 Water Polo In Loss To No. 13 Fresno State

Long Beach State fell behind 7-1 in the first quarter but battled back in a three-goal loss.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Maria Mimidi, Orsi Hertzka and Olivia Grim all had three goals for Long Beach State as the Beach charged back from a slow start, but No. 13 Fresno State was able to hang on for a 14-11 win at the Wolverine Invitational.
 
Fresno State (6-8) and Long Beach State (5-9) traded goals in the first three possessions, but the Bulldogs would run off six unanswered goals before the end of the first quarter, putting the Beach in a hole.
 
Hertzka's second goal goth the Beach going in the second quarter, and Long Beach State pull back a pair of goals in the period. Grim scored in the closing seconds, getting the Beach within four at 9-5 at halftime.
 
The Beach continued to battle, scoring the first two goals in the third. Sarah Barker and Grim each found the net to make the score 9-7, as the Beach would routinely be within two goals.
 
LBSU couldn't pull back the gap any further however. With 2:30 remaining in the final period, Mimidi scored on the extra man to cut the lead to two for a fourth time at 12-10, but Fresno State answered on the next possession and held on for the 14-11 win.
               
No. 15 Long Beach State will play two more games in Ann Arbor tomorrow, facing St. Francis before taking on the hosts, No. 6 Michigan to close out their time in Michigan.
