Beach Women’s Golf Sits Top Five After Two Rounds in South Carolina

Long Beach State is in a tie for fifth place after 36 holes at the Briar’s Creek Invitational in South Carolina, ranking ahead of five ranked teams on the leaderboard with 18 holes to play on Tuesday.
JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – Long Beach State sits in a tie for fifth place after 36 holes at the Briar's Creek Invitational, surging up six spots on the leaderboard during a successful second round. Of the four teams ahead of Long Beach State after two rounds, three of them are nationally-ranked, and the Beach have better scores than five other ranked teams at this point in the tournament.
Juniors Maria Davis and Holland Shourds are in a tie for ninth after two rounds, each sitting 1-under for the tournament. Davis finished her first round at even par after making birdies on each of her final three holes. That carried over to her second round, where she made three birdies in her first seven holes before dropping two shots to finish that round with a 1-under 71.
Shourds was up and down in her first 18 holes, collecting four birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey to finish with a 73. In her second 18, she produced a bogey-free round with a pair of birdies to match the low round of the day for LBSU with a 2-under 70.
Senior Haley Tygret fired a 2-under 70 in the first round to help lead the way for the Beach, at one point making five birdies across one excellent six-hole stretch in the middle of her round. Both Cara Barker and Euna Pak were four shots better from round one to round two to help fuel Long Beach State's move up the leaderboard from 11th place to a tie for fifth.
The Beach will get back on the golf course at 6 a.m. PT with a shotgun start.
