Breaks Go Against Long Beach State In 2-1 Loss To Iowa State

Long Beach State outhit Iowa State 9 to 4 in the loss.
FULLERTON, Calif. – Long Beach State caught some bad breaks and stranded 11 runners, spoiling another excellent start from Ashley Coleman in a 2-1 loss against Iowa State to close the Easton Invitational.
Iowa State (17-10) struck first, as Sami Williams doubled into the gap to start the game, and was brought around to score with a sacrifice and a RBI groundout from Sally Woolpert.
Long Beach State (12-15) wasn't nearly as efficient with their chances, and it cost the Beach. Nichole Fry led off the inning with a double, same as the cyclones, and a hit batter and a flare to center loaded the bases. Alyssa Gonzales smashed a liner that hit the fence, but just inches foul. The sophomore then popped up for the second out, and Emma Hylen was able to wiggle out of the inning, a continuing theme.
The Beach left runners on the corners in the third inning, and then Iowa State had some more luck in the fourth. With one runner on, a potential double-play ball clipped off the top of the glove from a leaping Sydney McCollum to bring home a second run for the Cyclones.
In the bottom of the fourth, Long Beach State again put the leadoff batter on with a single from Tierra Falo, and a double from Katelyn Hanson put two on with no outs. A single from Justine Briones brought home a run for the Beach, but with runners on the corners, a controversial interference call on Briones on a grounder led to a double play, killing another Long Beach State rally.
In the fifth and sixth innings, Long Beach State again had runners in scoring position, stranding five more in the two innings, but Hylen was able to again get out of the inning, stealing a win despite giving up nine hits, including three doubles.
Coleman went the distance as well, striking out a pair while allowing no walks, but giving up the two runs on four hits on the day.
Long Beach State went 4-1 over the course of the weekend in Fullerton. The Beach will finish non-conference play next weekend, hosting Loyola Marymount at the LBSU Softball Complex for a doubleheader beginning at Noon on Saturday.
