Alyssa Gonzalez hit two home runs and tied a pair of school records in the win.
FULLERTON, Calif. – Sophomore Alyssa Gonzalez hit a pair of home runs and Ashley Coleman gave up one hit in a complete game shutout as Long Beach State dominated Boston 9-0 in their first game of the Easton Invitational.
Long Beach State (9-14) wasted no time getting going, as Nichole Fry walked to open the game, followed by a double from Naomi Hernandez. Boston (11-11) was able to get two outs, but not the third as Gonzalez smashed her second home run of the season to left to give the Beach a 3-0 lead.
In the third, the Beach added three more as Sydney McCollum doubled to kick off a two-out rally. Jamie Wren followed with an RBI single, bringing up Gonzalez. The sophomore then homered again, this time to center field to make the score 6-0.
Long Beach State added more insurance in the seventh with the top of the order coming through for a fourth time. Fry singled followed by a Hernandez walk, and McCollum's second double of the game brought in a run. Wren followed with a second double, and Gonzalez singled to center, driving in two more RBI to make the score 9-0.
Coleman was effectively wild, working around six walks behind a season-high tying seven strikeouts. The junior walked five in the first two innings before setting down 10 in a row and not allowing a hit until the seventh inning in the one-hitter.
Gonzalez tied the school record with seven RBI in the game, now shared by teammate Taylor Rowland and Ashlynn Booker while becoming the 30th LBSU player to hit two home runs in the same game.
Long Beach State will play again later today, facing Charleston at 4 p.m.
