Tennis Slips In Loss To Houston

Long Beach State takes a split over the week after the loss to the Cougars.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State fell by a 4-0 margin to Houston on Thursday at the Rhodes Tennis Center, earning a split over the week following Wednesday's win over Youngstown State.
Long Beach State (9-3) was leading the top flight of doubles when the point was secured, but Houston (9-5) won the other two matches to claim the point. Sophie Gerits and Ndindi Ndunda were 6-2 winners at No. 2, handing Lalita Devarakonda and Natalia Munoz a rare loss, while Jovana Vukovic and Phonexay Chitdara defeated Zara Lennon and Carlota Casasampere 6-3.
Singles action went in a similar fashion, with the early conclusion disguising a much closer match, as Wiktoria Rutkowska, Munoz and Dominique Meyer were all playing in third sets at the conclusion of the match.
The Cougars picked up the three wins they needed though to come away with the road win. Vukovic picked up the first victory in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Lennon, and Chitdara was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Devarakonda at No. 5 to put Houston one win away. Mimi Kendall-Woseley then closed out the match by defeating Emma Bardet 6-4, 6-3.
Long Beach State continues their homestand next week, hosting Cincinnati on Wednesday before resuming Big West play against Hawai'i on Thursday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in the Rhodes Tennis Center.
