
LBSU Wraps up Day One at the Beach Opener

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Long Beach State track and field program began its outdoor season on Friday at the Beach Opener, competing against schools from around Southern California.

The Beach opened up day one in the field. Senior Crystal Rodriquez won the women's javelin, throwing a mark of 131-10.00 to open up in her final outdoor season. Following closely behind her for the Beach was Sarah Baker in third place with a throw of 123-02.00. Haley Shoemaker also placed, throwing a mark of 116-06.00 to finish in fifth.

On the men's side, LBSU senior Herman Day won the javelin throw in his comeback season with a mark of 170-04.00. Fellow teammates John Broadhead, Derreck Affor, and Ryan Coy also had solid performances in the event, finishing in fourth, fifth, and seventh.

More in the field, senior De'Ondra young finished second in the women's hammer throw, following closely behind Barbara Coward of UC Irvine with a solid mark of 57.18m (187-07). Teammate Erykah McNairy finished in third, landing a new personal record of 177-00.00, moving her to seventh on the all-time list. Amanda Truong also hit a new PR with a mark of 164-06 to finish fifth in the competition.

The Beach took charge in the men's hammer throw, finishing in the top three spots in the event. Junior Nicholas Hudson opened up the outdoor season with a new personal record, throwing to a mark of 205-04.00 to put him at seventh on the all-time list. Charlie Vernoy also hit a new PR and finished second in the event with a mark of 183-01 in his final throw. Senior Josh Carr had a solid performance, finishing in third with a mark of 182-03 and conclude day one of competition.

The Beach will be back in action on Saturday with the women's 3,000-meters scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m.
