Long Beach State Drops San Jose State 5-0 In First Shutout Of 2019

Ashley Coleman struck out four for her first shutout at LBSU.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Ashley Coleman struck out four on the way to the first shutout of the season while Alyssa Gonzalez had the big hit with a three-run home run as the Beach got off to a quick start at the San Diego Classic with a 5-0 win over San Jose State.
Coleman was in control throughout, scattering four hits on the way to her fourth win of the season and the first shutout of the year for Long Beach State (7-8).
The Beach took a 1-0 lead in the third that would be the only run through most of an exciting contest. Breezy Wise drew a leadoff walk, and after a single from Nichole Fry, Naomi Hernandez reached on a bunt single to load the bases for the Beach. Jamie Wren then singled to right, plating one before Gonzalez grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Wren played a big role defensively as well, holding San Jose State (10-6) off of the board in the fourth. The only batter to reach third on the day, Rayohna Sagapolu hit a one-out triple to the gap for the Spartans, and a single to left from Jenessa Ullegue threatened to even the score, but Wren threw out the runner at the plate to keep the Beach in front.
Following two more scoreless innings, Long Beach State broke the game open in the seventh in de ja vu from the seventh. Wise opened the inning with a single and stole second. Hernandez drove in an insurance run, and after a walk to Wren put two on for Gonzalez, the sophomore cracked her first home run of the season, a three-run shot to lead to the 5-0 final.
Coleman worked a scoreless seventh, retiring 10 of the final 12 batters without giving up a hit. The Beach is back in action later today against Illinois-Chicago.
