Softball Finishes With Split After Loss To Illinois-Chicago

Long Beach State had eight of nine starters finish with hits.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Coming off of a win over San Jose State in the team's morning game, Long Beach State couldn't finish off the double-header sweep as a five-run third inning paced Illinois-Chicago to an 8-2 win.
Long Beach State (7-9) starter Kellie White retired the Flames in order in the first and second innings, but Illinois-Chicago (2-8) took advantage of wildness from the junior in the third inning to get on the board. Four straight walks scored the opening run while leading the bases loaded and a sacrifice fly brought home an additional run.
RBI hits from Kayla Wedl and Tara McElligott added three more and the Flames held a 5-0 lead after three innings.
The Beach cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Taylor Jaurique, making her first start of the year doubled to start the inning, and scored on an RBI single from Nichole Fry. Naomi Hernandez followed with a double to score the senior, making the score 5-2.
Devyn Magnett closed out the third inning and pitched two more scoreless innings, but the Flames tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead.
Long Beach State ultimately out-hit the Flames eight to six on the day but UIC picked up the win.
