
Long Beach State Splits Opening Doubleheader At Triton Invitational

No. 16 Long Beach State was unable to defeat No. 13 LMU, 10-9, but LBSU came back later that day to defeat Pomona-Pitzer, 17-8.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State opened the Triton Invitational against the No. 13 LMU Lions and made a late push at the end, but came up short, 10-9.
The Beach found themselves down at the end of the first quarter as sophomore Olivia Grim scored a goal and junior Marilia Mimidi scored twice to leave things at 5-3. The game began to pick up towards the end as freshman Sarah Barker, freshman Orsi Hertzka, senior Tori Morrissey, and freshman Gabriella Matafora-Adams all scored in the third quarter, but the Beach were still down 10-7. The Beach would make a final push in the fourth as Morrissey would score twice to pickup a hat trick on the day, but LBSU would fall 10-9.
LBSU would be back in the pool later in the day to face the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. Long Beach State was rolling on all cylinders both defensively and offensively. Mimidi, senior Annabel Harman, Hertzka, Grim, and Matafora-Adams all scored in the first quarter as LBSU pitched a shut-out at the end of commencing period. The Beach would score five more in the second quarter as the Sagehens would put themselves on the board with a couple goals of their own, 10-4.
Long Beach State would continue to pour it on and increase their lead to eight in the third quarter, 14-6. LBSU would finish the game beating Pomona-Pitzer by nine, 17-8.
Hertzka led all scorers with four goals against the Sagehens. Both Junior Paige Bennett and Morrissey would score a hat trick against the Sagehens, followed by two goals from senior Annabel Harman. Mimidi, Matafora-Adams, Barker, junior Isabel Riley, and Grim all aided the Beach with one goal each.
Overall, Hertzka moved to 14 goals on the season, followed by Morrissey and Harman who both have nine goals. Bennett moved to six goals and Barker would move to five goals.
The Beach will be back in the pool tomorrow morning, at 10:40 a.m. for the final day of the Triton Invitational and will face the winner of San Diego State and CSUN.
