
Beach Beat CSUN, But Drop Final Match Against UC San Diego

No. 16 Long Beach State surpassed No. 21 CSUN, 10-4, but were unable to beat No. 20 UC San Diego, 9-6.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State faced No. 21 CSUN (2-5) in their opening match on the final day in the Triton Invitational and began the day with a victory, 10-4.
Freshman sensation Orsi Hertzka opened the game with her first goal of the day as LBSU trailed 2-1 after one period. The Beach would charge back in the second quarter as they would take a 5-3 lead with goals from junior Marilia Mimidi and three more from Hertzka.
LBSU would keep the same pace for the remainder of the game as they would tack on three more goals in the third from Mimidi, freshman Camille Gallardo-Russell, and Hertzka. Long Beach State would pick up the victory, 10-4, with two final goals from freshman Sarah Barker, and Hertzka.
With the victory, the Beach advanced to play in the ninth place game where they faced No. 20 UC San Diego (3-5). Hertzka would pick up where she left off in the previous match and assist the Beach in scoring, along with Barker. The Beach trailed after one, 3-2.
Hertzka would score again in the second and third quarter, followed by freshman Katie Dill scoring in the third period. LBSU trailed at the end of three, 7-5. Sophomore Olivia Grim would score the final goal in the match for the Beach as they would fall 9-6.
Hertzka tallied nine goals on the day, and had 14 total goals in the Triton Invitational. The freshman had six total goals against CSUN and it is tied for second most in LBSU history for most goals in a match. Hertzka tied Roberta Stewart, Cassie Azevedo, Stacy Black, and Melissa Matheson with her efforts against the Matadors. After this weekend's offensive arsenal, Hertzka moves to 23 total goals on the season, leading all scorers for the Beach. Barker would bring her total to seven goals on the season as well.
The Beach will be back in action at the UC Irvine Tournament on February 22-24 with opponents still waiting to be announced.
