LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's basketball team was hot from three-point range as the Beach shot over 50-percent from long distance en route to a 56-40 victory over Hawai'i at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday afternoon.
The Beach (7-15, 4-5 Big West) were led by sophomore forward Naomi Hunt's 20-point performance as six of Hunt's seven field goals came from behind the arc. Hunt's six made threes tied her career-high as she shot 66.7-percent from three-point range (6-for-9).
Hunt led a trio of scorers who reached double figures as teammates Shanaijah Davison and Justina King added to the LBSU offensive output. Davison would finish the game with 18 points, while King added 11.
Hawaii (9-13, 5-4 Big West) was limited by the Beach's strong defensive effort as Long Beach State held the Rainbow Wahine to 25.5 percent shooting (13-for-51) in the game. Hunt led the Beach with eight rebounds, while Cydnee Kinslow added six boards and three steals. Aaryon Green also collected three steals to help lead the defense.
Long Beach State started the game off strong as the Beach made 4-of-8 field goals in the opening frame, but more impressive, did not allow Hawaii to sink a bucket for the first 9:58 of the quarter. The Rainbow Wahine were held to just two points – from a pair of free throws – until Myrrah Joseph made a layup with just two seconds left in the frame as the Beach took a 9-4 lead into the second quarter.
The Beach had another solid outing in the next 10 minutes of action as Hunt drained three consecutive treys to open up a 27-14 advantage with 1:33 left in the first half. With the nine points from Hunt, Long Beach State took a 28-16 lead over Hawaii into the locker room at halftime.
Following the intermission, LBSU charged out of the gate and shot 57.1 percent from the field and 60-percent from three-point range. The Beach connected on 8-of-14 from the field with 3-of-5 coming from long distance as they outscored the Rainbow Wahine 22-13 in the frame to lead 50-29 going into the fourth quarter.
Although Hawaii managed to hold Long Beach State to just 20-percent shooting (2-for-10) in the final 10 minutes, the Beach's 22-point lead (47-25) was more than enough cushion for Long Beach State to secure the 56-40 victory.
The Beach will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 14 when they host UC Irvine in the Black and Blue Rivalry at 7 p.m.
