
Long Beach State Suffers Overtime Loss at Cal Poly

Shanaijah Davison leads all scorers with 26 points in setback

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore Shanaijah Davison tallied her sixth 20-point performance of the season, but Long Beach State was unable to hold on as the Beach dropped a 66-59 overtime contest at Cal Poly on Wednesday night.
The loss drops the Beach to 6-15 on the year and 3-5 in Big West action, as the Mustangs improve to 5-14 overall and 2-6 in league play.
Davison finished the game with 26 points as she drained a total of six threes to tie her career-high. The guard from Woodland, Calif., also added four steals, three assists and one rebound. Joining Davison in double-figures was Naomi Hunt who concluded the game with 11 points.
The Beach started the game off strong and took a three-point lead (29-26) over the Mustangs into the locker room at halftime. However, Cal Poly came out and outscored LBSU 14-8 in the third quarter as the Beach trailed 40-37 going into the fourth quarter.
Long Beach State turned in a strong performance in the final 10 minutes of regulation as they shot 50-percent from the field, connecting on 6-of-12 field goals to score 17 points in the frame. The Beach defense held the Mustangs to 28.6 percent shooting as Cal Poly was held scoreless for the first three minutes of the frame.
The Beach led by as many as six points (50-44) in the fourth quarter and held that advantage as late as 1:28 in the frame. However, the Mustangs would not go away as Cal Poly chipped away and whittled LBSU's lead down to three (54-51) with 18 seconds left in regulation. Then with just 11 seconds on the clock, Dye Stahley drained a three to even the score at 54-54 en route to forcing overtime.
In overtime, Stahley scored all but two of the Mustangs' points as Cal Poly outscored Long Beach State 12-5 in the final five minutes of action as the Beach dropped a heartbreaking 66-59 contest.
Stahley would finish the game with 23 points, while Hana Vesela would add 19.
Despite the loss, Long Beach State received solid performances from Aaryon Green, who posted seven rebounds and seven points, as well as Justina King, who contributed seven assists, five points, five boards, and two steals.
Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track on Saturday, Feb. 9, when the Beach host Hawaii at the Walter Pyramid. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
