Briggs set to compete in the men's long jump March 8.
LONG BEACH, CALIF. – Long Beach State senior jumper Kemonie Briggs will represent the Beach at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Alabama at the Birmingham Complex. Briggs will compete in the men's long jump which will take place Friday, March 8 at 5:30 p.m. (PT).
Briggs performance and school-record jump of 7.80 (25-07.25) earlier this season at the Don Kirby Invitational, hosted by New Mexico is the mark that earned him a spot at the Indoor Nationals. His jump ranks him 16th in the nation, securing the final spot to advance to the championships.
"Kemonie is making an impact with our team in ways we did not anticipate," said Long Beach State coach Andy Sythe.
The Long Beach native made a transition as a sprinter and quarter-miler to adding the long jump to his list of events his freshman year at LBSU. Show casing his versatility over the years, Briggs became one of the best long jumpers the program has seen.
In 2016, Briggs won the Big West Championships with a jump of 26-02.25, making him the first individual to reach 26 feet at the conference meet since 1984.
"He is a gifted athlete and quality individual, so I could not be happier for our program and for a guy who comes from down the street," Sythe said.
Among the Big West schools who competed in the MPSF Championships, Briggs was the only athlete to punch a ticket to his first Indoor Championships.
"Our university has had tremendous success with the athletes from local schools," Sythe said. "They put their confidence in us to develop them and we did."
With an outstanding season, Briggs will finish up his indoor career and begin his final collegiate outdoor season for the Beach.
