Davis Leads Long Beach State in Day One at The Gold Rush

Long Beach State is hosting its annual Gold Rush this week at Old Ranch Country Club, and junior Maria Davis had a strong first day for the Beach. She currently sits third on the player leaderboard, buoyed by a career-low round of 68 (-4) in the second round.

SEAL BEACH, Calif. – Day one is in the books with 36 holes completed at the annual Gold Rush. Golfers enjoyed perfect weather with clear blue skies overhead at Old Ranch Country Club, and Long Beach State fared well on its home course, finishing the day in fourth as a team.
Junior Maria Davis led the way for the black & gold and is in third place after 36 holes, sitting 3-under for the tournament. Her 4-under round of 68 in the second round was the best of her career, and was the second-best second round of the entire field, trailing only tournament leader Abegail Arevalo from San Jose State. Davis made seven birdies in her second round and finished strong, going 4-under over her final nine holes and ending with a birdie on No. 1.
Freshman Hannah Ko and senior Cara Barker had identical scores on Monday, each shooting 75 in the first round and an even-par 72 in round two. Both players sit in a tie for 13th after the first day of competition.
Long Beach State also had the top two individual performers, with junior Holland Shourds and freshman Morgan Polley sitting tied for 31st after they both went 75-76 in their first two rounds.
Action resumes with the final round on Tuesday at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at Old Ranch. Long Beach State will be paired with BYU and Fresno State for the final 18 holes.
