Women’s Tennis Closes Bay Area Trip With Another Win

Long Beach State has opened the dual match season with six straight wins.
MORAGA, Calif. – Long Beach State finished off their trip to Northern California with another win, grabbing the doubles point on the way to a 4-2 victory over Saint Mary's on the road.
"I'm really proud of the way our team played the weekend," said head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "We came up with two strong road wins to keep our excellent start to the season going."
The depth for Long Beach State (6-0) again proved important, as the Beach took a doubles win behind wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Hind Abdelouahid and Maria Kozyreva won 6-3 over Wiktoria Rutkowska and Dominique Meyer, but the Beach bounced back with two 6-4 wins. Natalia Munoz and Lalita Devarakonda defeated Clementine Clement and Liesel Pieters to clinch the point after a win from Emma Bardet and Zara Lennon over Chloe Goyette and Aubane Ville.
In singles, Kozyreva showed her class with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Rutkowska to claim a point for Saint Mary's, but the Beach win three of the five remaining matches to seal the win.
Devarakonda quickly put the Beach back out in front with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ville at No. 6, while her doubles partner Munoz was also a straight sets winnver over Abdelouahid, 6-4, 7-5. Lennon fell at No. 4, but Bardet wrapped up the match with a three-set win over Clement, winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Next up for Long Beach State is another attempt at the twice rained-out match with San Diego. Scheduled start time is on Thursday, February 28 at 2 p.m. The Beach will then play two important Big West matches over the weekend against Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly.
