Tennis Takes First Loss In Tight 4-3 Loss Against San Diego

The Beach will play two Big West matches this weekend.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State lost for the first time this season as the weather finally cooperated to complete the dual against San Diego. The Toreros were able to hold off the Beach in a 4-3 decision Thursday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
Third time was the charm in completing the twice rescheduled match against the Toreros. San Diego (5-2) started off the day by taking the doubles point, as Soylmar Colling and Maria-Paula Torres won 6-3 over Wiktoria Rutkowska and Dominuque Meyer and Gemma Garcia and Kati Kukaras sealed the point with a win over Emma Bardet and Zara Lennon at No. 3.
Colling also won in singles, staking San Diego to a 2-0 lead in as straight sets win over Rutkowska, but Long Beach State (6-1) bounced back. Lalita Devarakonda was a straight set winner over Sophia Chow, 6-1, 6-3, as was Natalia Munoz at No. 3 over Kukaras in a 6-3, 6-2 win to tie the match at 2-2.
The Toreros would pull out the match however, as Garcia won 6-4, 6-4 over Lennon to get within one, and Torres sealed the win in a hard-fought match with Meyer, 7-5, 7-6. Bardet and Daniela Morales split two sets, and Bardet closed out the match with a 10-4 win in the shortened third.
Big West play resumes for the Beach this weekend. Long Beach State will travel to face Cal State Fullerton on the road Saturday before returning to Long Beach to host Cal Poly. Both matches are slated to start at 11 a.m.
