The Beach was within one run after four innings, but the Wildcats had two big innings late.

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Long Beach State used hits from Taylor Rowland and Tierra Falo to pull within one run of No. 13 Arizona, but the Wildcats used two four-run innings to come away with a 12-3 win over LBSU in the first game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic for the Beach.

                Long Beach State (5-6) and Arizona (8-4) worked through the first two innings scoreless, before the Wildcats would take the first lead, capitalizing on pair of LBSU errors to take a 4-0 lead with three unearned runs.

                Ashley Coleman responded with a shutdown inning in the top of the fourth, and then the Beach made their charge in the fourth inning. Naomi Hernandez led off the inning, and Jamie Wren followed with a single to put two on with no outs.

                Hernandez was thrown out at home on a single from Alyssa Gonzalez, but the Beach kept pushing, scoring first on a double from Rowland and then adding two more on a single from Tierra Falo.

                Down by the lone run, Coleman picked up two outs in the sixth, and was one strike away from getting out of a first and third jam before a Reyna Carranco double that scored two runs. A two-run home run by Jessie Harper extended the lead, and then the Wildcats scored four more runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

                Long Beach State will play two more games in Palm Springs tomorrow, first taking on North Carolina before facing Northwestern. First pitch in the opening game is scheduled for 10 a.m.
