Fry Leads Long Beach State To Win Over North Carolina In Split Saturday

2/23/2019 5:46:00 PM | Softball

Fry became the 29th player in school history to hit two home runs in one game in the win.

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Nichole Fry delivered with two home runs, finishing 3-for-4 with five RBI as Long Beach State rallied to defeat North Carolina in the first of two games for the Beach on Saturday.

Long Beach State (6-6) ended the day .500 after falling to Northwestern 2-1 in the second game for the Beach.

North Carolina (6-6) took an early lead in the opening game, pushing around a leadoff walk to take a 1-0 lead after the first inning, which would hold through the first three frames.

In the top of the fourth, Long Beach State took their first lead of the game from Fry. Sydney McCollum singled to put one on, followed by a walk to Breezy Wise, leaving two on for Fry who smashed a homer to left to take a 3-1 lead.

The Tar Heels answered in similar fashion in the bottom half, though, putting two on in front of Megan Dray who hit a three-run homer as well to put UNC back in front.

Long Beach State would retake the lead in the sixth. Fry walked with one out to start the rally, and after a second walk to Hernandez, back-to-back hits from Alyssa Gonzalez and Taylor Rowland made the score 6-4 in favor of the Beach.

Fry's second homer of the game, a two-run shot in the seventh put away the victory as Ashley Coleman picked up her first save in support of Devyn Magnett, who got the win on the strength of three scoreless innings of relief.

Long Beach State fell in their second game of the day despite an excellent relief effort from freshman Samantha Fowler, who pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, scattering three hits.

Northwestern (11-2) scratched out an early lead with solo runs in each of the first two innings. A solo home run from Morgan Nelson put the Wildcats on the board in the first, and then back-to-back hits from Maeve Nelson and Danielle Williams in the second added another.

Fowler got the Beach out of the inning and went the rest of the way in the circle, but that would be enough for Williams and Northwestern. The Beach pulled back one run in the sixth, as Jamie Wren hit a one-out single, and after a double from Gonzalez put two in scoring position, an RBI groundout from Rowland plated the senior outfielder.

Long Beach State closes out the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Sunday morning against Cal. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., with live coverage at www.beachlivestats.com.
