LBSU Completes First Day of Action at MPSF Indoor Championships

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Beach opened up competition at the 2019 MPSF Indoor Championships on Friday, ending day one with a solid start. The men's program collected 19 points on day one to rank fifth in the competition while the women's program sits in 11th with 13 points.
The Beach had a pair of point- scorers in the men's long jump. Senior Kemonie Briggs led the Beach and became the 2019 MPSF Indoor Champion, making his fifth jump the best one in the field. With a mark of 25-07.25, Briggs tied his school-record and brought in ten points for the Beach. This win makes it his second MPSF title in the long jump for the Beach and the third individual indoor title since he won this event in 2017. Also setting a new indoor-best mark was junior Jason Smith, leaping 25-00.50 to finish second with eight points and also moved up to the second spot on the all-time list.
Among the events completed on Friday, senior De'Ondra Young was the first athlete for the Beach to put up points in the women's weight throw with a mark of 61-07.50 to place fifth. Her performance brought in four points for LBSU's team total.
In the 60-meter prelims, Courtne' Davis qualified for the finals and tied her own school record with a time of 7.38. She was the winner of heat five to place third overall going into the final round. Team Captain Azaria Hill was just off her career-best, running a time of 7.62 to take second in the heat and place 16th after prelims.
Davis led the way for Long Beach State in the women's 200-meter dash, winning her heat and finishing second overall to add eight points for the Beach. She was just off her own school record in this event, finishing with a time of 24.04. Hill ran 24.98 and Madison Golden clocked a 25.27 as all three competitors won their respective heats.
Sophomore Koty Burton solidified his spot to compete in Saturday's finals, running the fourth-fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles. Burton finished in a time of 7.95 to place first in heat four and break his own school record.
In the men's 200-meter dash, freshman Femi Ajose led the Beach by tying his time of 22.39 to finish second in his heat and 23rd overall. In the women's long jump, Melanee Williams posted a new personal-best mark of 18.09.75, moving her up to fourth on the all-time list and adding a point to LBSU's team total. Charlie Vernoy also posted a new-personal best in the men's weight throw with a mark of 61-09.00 to finish eight and move to seventh on the all-time list.
Halfway through the men's heptathlon, John Broadhead sits in fifth among the group of eight competitors, finishing with a win in the high jump and a clearance of 6-07.00. Followed closely behind him is teammate Derreck Affor in sixth place with 2817 points after day one, running a time of 7.03 in the 60-meters to finish second.
LBSU resumes action at the MPSF Championships on Saturday with the first events scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at Dempsey Indoor.
