Softball Closes Homestand With 4-2 Win Over Army

2/20/2019 2:18:00 PM | Softball

Home runs from Jamie Wren and Justine Briones help lift the Beach over the Black Knights.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Junior Kellie White went the distance, striking out six batters and got support from the long ball, with home runs from Jamie Wren and Justine Briones lifting the offense as the Beach dropped Army 4-2 on Wednesday.

White finished her third complete game of the season, striking out six batters while avoiding the big hit for most of the day. The junior also got plenty of support from her teammates to never trail in the game.

Long Beach State (5-5) broke through in the third inning, as Nichole Fry hit the second of her three singles on the day to open the inning, and then Wren lifted a home run into right-center field to give the Beach a 2-0 lead.

One inning later, it was Fry who delivered the RBI, as Long Beach State capitalized on an error by bringing that runner in to score after singles from Maddy Ruffin and Fry.

Army (4-7) pulled back a run in the top of the sixth inning. White allowed a walk and a double to start the inning, but battled through the jam and limited the damage to a single run. The Beach then immediately regained a three-run lead in the bottom half, as Briones hit her second home run of the season, a solo shot to make the score 4-1.

The Black Knights threatened one last time in the top of the seventh, but a pair of groundouts to Sydney McCollum at second base helped the Beach wrap up the victory and pull back to .500 before heading to Palm Springs.

Long Beach State will return to tournament competition starting tomorrow at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Beach will start the tournament against a pair of ranked teams, facing No. 25 Texas Tech Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. before taking on No. 13 Arizona at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Beach will be in Palm Springs for four days, finishing the tournament on Sunday.
