Tennis Improves To 2-0 With Win At San Diego State

Freshman Dominique Meyer clinched the match with a three-set win.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach State battled back to pick up a solid early season victory, taking down San Diego State on the road in a 4-3 win. The Beach dropped the doubles point but rebounded to win four singles matches, capped by freshman Dominique Meyer clinching the match with a three-set victory at No. 5.
Meyer was also victorious to start the day in doubles, winning with Wiktoria Rutkowska 6-2 over Jenny Moinard and Shakhnoza Khatamova in the top flight. The Beach fell in two close matches in the rest of doubles to start the day behind 1-0 against San Diego State (3-1).
Sophomore Sadaf Sadeghvaziri brought the Beach even by dispatching Agustina Romoldi 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6, and Emma Bardet followed in flight two with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over Mia Smith to put the Beach out in front. Nnena Nadozie then evened the match for the Aztecs with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Zara Lennon.
Two first set tiebreakers ended up setting the tone for those matches. In the top flight, Moinard was able to hold off Rutkowska 7-6, 6-3 while Natalia Munoz picked up a critical win for LBSU, winning 7-5 in her first set tiebreaker before rolling to a 6-2 win.
That left the only match remaining in the third set between Meyer and Abbie Mulbarger. Meyer won the first set 6-2, but lost the second 6-1 leading to the decisive set not just for the match but also for the dual.
The freshman stepped up the challenge, winning 6-4 to hand the match to Long Beach State (2-0) who collected their first road win in their first opportunity.
The Beach is back in Long Beach for their next match, hosting San Diego at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Note that is a date change from the originally scheduled time due to anticipated rains on Saturday.
