
No. 6 Long Beach State Splits Senior Day Doubleheader

LBSU loses to Cal 11-10 in overtime and beats LBCC 14-7.
LONG BEACH, Calif.— A goal in the final 30 seconds for No. 8 California allowed the Golden Bears to force overtime and grab a tight 11-10 win over Long Beach State, but the Beach bounced back with a 14-7 victory over Long Beach City to close out Senior Day at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
In the first game of the day, No. 6 Long Beach State (14-11) dropped a heartbreaker to No. 8 Cal (11-8).
Strong defense and even play from both teams led to a tied score of 2-2 in the first quarter and 5-5 entering the second half. Long Beach State took a late lead in the fourth quarter on a goal from Matt Morris in the final minute, but the Golden Bears answered to send the game into overtime.
Taking the lead in the second half, a last second goal from Cal tied it up 9-9 sending the game to overtime. Cal scored the first goal in overtime thirty seconds in and then another goal 15 seconds into the second over time.
A penalty awarded to Cal looked to seal things for the Golden Bears, but Marwan Darwish made a huge save to keep the Beach in it, and Morris scored again to pull the Beach within one, but LBSU couldn't close out the overtime comeback.
Rafael Real Vergara and Morris led the Beach with three goals each. Quinten Osborne had two goals and Garrett Zaan and Theodoros Pateros each had one goal in the overtime loss to Cal.
In the second game of the day, Long Beach state defeated Long Beach City College (24-2) with goals from ten different players.
The Beach came out strong in the first quarter scoring six goals by six different players. Long Beach State continued their offensive efforts outscoring the Vikings 14-7.
The Beach were led by Senior Johnathan Wong who had three goals on the game followed by Morris and Senior Austin Stewart who both had two goals.
The Beach will play Pepperdine on Saturday at Noon in Malibu for a GCC matchup.
