LOS ANGELES, Calif.—No. 8 Long Beach State kicked off non-tournament play with a loss on the road Friday night, falling 11-7 on the road at No. 2 UCLA.
Long Beach State (10-7) kept even with the Bruins through the first quarter behind goals from sophomore Garrett Zaan and an extra man goal by Nemanja Bakic, staying even with UCLA (10-1) through the first quarter.
The Bruins scored five in the second to take a three-goal lead into the second half, and while Long Beach State held close the rest of the way the Beach couldn't chip into that first-half lead.
The Beach were led by Senior Austin Stewart and Zaan who each had two goals. Rafael Real Vergara, Matt Morris and Bakic each contributed a goal in the attempt to upset the Bruins.
Long Beach State will start a long homestand next Saturday, Oct. 12 when they host Stanford for their home opener at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center at Noon. That is the first of eight straight home games for the Beach. Tickets are available now at www.longbeachstate.com.
