SAN DIEGO – Sophomore Emma Bardet improved to 4-0 in singles play at this weekend's ITA Southwest Regionals, picking up a pair of big wins on Friday. Bardet knocked off three-time Big West Player of the Year Petra Melounova of Hawai'i to start the day, then picked up another victory to advance to Saturday's quarterfinal round.
Â
Bardet's win over Melounova, who reached the Round of 16 in last year's NCAA Tournament and is ranked No. 33 in the country, was a 6-4, 7-6 victory. She followed that up with a 6-3, 6-4 win over LMU's Eva Marie Voracek to reach the quarterfinal, along with seven other players from across the region. Bardet is now 4-0 on the weekend and has yet to drop a set in any of those wins.
Â
LBSU also got singles wins outside of the main draw, as Wiktoria Rutkowska defeated Cal State Fullerton's Eira Tobrand 7-6, 6-4. Zara Lennon went three sets against Kayla Wilkins of Arizona to pick up the win, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.
Â
The Beach swept its two doubles matches on Friday, with Lennon and Natalia Munoz winning their first match in the main draw after receiving a first-round bye. They defeated Puehse/Weiss of Grand Canyon, 8-6. In an extra match, Rutkowska/Bardet teamed up to blank Mackensen/Alajeely, 8-0.
Â
Play will continue down in San Diego on Saturday morning as Bardet looks to move to the singles semifinals and the Lennon/Munoz pair looks to advance to the quarterfinals in the doubles bracket. Lennon, Munoz and Rutkowska are all scheduled to play extra singles matches on Saturday as well.
