LBSU Tennis Has Successful Opening Day at Fall Tournament

Long Beach State opened this weekend’s Beach Tennis Fall Tournament with a strong showing on Friday at Rhodes Tennis Center. The Beach went a combined 10-2 across doubles and singles play to kick off the annual tournament.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Beach Tennis began its fall tournament on Friday morning at Rhodes Tennis Center and had a productive day on the courts, going a combined 10-2 across singles and doubles play. The Beach have six singles players and two doubles teams advancing to the semifinal round on Saturday morning.

Friday started with the Beach sweeping its first round of doubles matches, dropping just five games combined across the three victories. The biggest winner was the pair of Sadeghvaziri/Devarakonda, who were 6-1 winners in their only doubles match of the day in Flight B. In the top doubles flight, both Beach pairs (Munoz/Lennon and Rutkowska/Bardet) were 6-2 winners to advance to Friday afternoon's quarterfinal round.

The Beach didn't let up during singles play, going 6-1 across three singles flights. Emma Bardet had the most lopsided victory of the afternoon, going 6-0, 6-0 in her singles win to advance to the Flight B semifinals tomorrow. Also in Flight B, Lalita Devarakonda was a 6-1, 6-1 winner and Sadaf Sadeghvaziri claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win.

In Flight A of singles, the Beach went 2-1, getting victories from Natalia Munoz (6-3, 7-6 (4)) and Wiktoria Rutkowska (6-3, 6-4). In Flight C, Carlota Casasampere was a 6-2, 6-1 winner to move on to her semifinal as well.

The day concluded with two more doubles matches in Flight A, where Munoz/Lennon picked up a second victory of the day, 6-1. The other Beach pair of Rutkowska/Bardet withdrew from their doubles match.

The Beach Tennis Fall Tournament will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m. with semifinal rounds of doubles and singles, along with consolation brackets.
