Long Beach State Unable To Surpass Foes On Sunday

No. 11 Long Beach State fell to No. 14 San Jose State, 15-8 and to No. 4 Cal, 11-9.

BERKELEY, Calif. – Long Beach State was in search of their first win of the season when they took on No. 14 San Jose State. The Spartans jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, with the lone goal for LBSU coming from sophomore Olivia Grim. LBSU would continue to fight from behind as they trailed 9-4 at the half with goals coming from freshman Orsi Hertzka, senior Annabel Harman, and freshmen Katie Dill. The Beach would end up falling to San Jose State, 15-8, with the final goals coming from junior Paige Bennett, Harman, freshman Camille Gallardo-Russell and junior Isabel Riley.

The Beach would then take on No. 4 Cal in their final match of the weekend. Cal would take the lead at the end of one with a score 3-2 as Hertzka and Bennett netted the goals for the Beach. LBSU would continue to hang around as they scored two more goals in the second quarter to tie things up at 4-4. Hertzka would strike again in the third period to bag a hat trick on the day while Harman would score twice in the quarter to keep things at par, 7-7. The Bears would pull away and take the match, 11-9.

Freshman Sarah Barker would also score on the day. Hertzka would finish the match against Cal with five total goals.

The Beach will be back in the pool on Feb. 9 and Feb. 10 in the UC San Diego Invitational, held in UC San Diego.
